Do You Need Motivation to Start Losing Weight?

No MotivationSometimes we get stuck on reading and studying and thinking about losing  weight, but we never actually get started on the diet itself.  Taking action seems like a giant step that we will only be able to take after we know everything there is to know about this diet or healthy eating plan.

The easy part is reading and planning for some day in the future when you will start that diet.  The hard part is motivating yourself to actually get started.

What is motivation? It is that push that gets you to start taking action. It is what propels your movement towards accomplishing your goal.

Sometimes motivation can start with an upcoming event, such as a wedding or a party or a trip that you are looking forward to, and that may be the trigger that gets you motivated to actually start working on your weight loss plan and taking the action needed.

What if you don’t have anything special coming up.  How do you motivate yourself?  You can use your mental thought processes to get you moving towards taking that first step of starting a weight loss journey.

Eliminate all negative thoughts about the diet.  ”It is hard work, I don’t know how to follow a diet, I don’t have the right food in the house. I will just gain the weight back, I will be hungry all the time, I’m too busy right now, I’m too stressed right now,  I can’t do it today, I’ll start tomorrow …”   Does all this negative self talk sound familiar? 

We all do this internal dialogue.  You can work at replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones.

“I can do this”
“I will start this diet for my health” 
“Today I will start eating healthier.”
“I will buy healthy foods and snacks.”

Just Do It“Just do it now” is my favorite.  It does not matter that you do not feel totally prepared yet. It is ok that you have not studied everything there is to know about weight loss yet.  You have to just jump in and do something, anything that will give you a starting point.  It is the process of taking action, any action towards the goal, that gives you the motivation to keep taking more actions.

If you have only read two chapters in that weight loss book, just start right now by practicing what you learned in those two chapters.  If you have no healthy food in the house, just start today by buying one shopping bag of  only healthy food. 

It’s a funny thing with motivation, it builds upon itself.  Each tiny action that you are motivated to take, will motivate you to repeat that action and to take another action.
 
Success Starts With Small StepsWeight loss is often like a mind game you play with yourself.  Win that game by congratulating yourself for each action that you take towards your ultimate goal.  Forgive yourself for any transgressions, but then get right back in the game.  Each and every tiny success that you have will motivate you to reach for your next success.
